“Worthy books are not companions – they are solitude:We lose ourselves in them and our cares.” ~ Philip James Bailey (1816-1902), Festus
I love Bailey’s definition because it brings the joy of reading down to its very essence – What books do we get lost in?
Right now I have over 200 books and magazines in my living room bagged and waiting for their trip to Second Glance-Second Chance. There are romance and mysteries, best sellers and self-published, books for children and books about sports . . . They were donated by my writer friends this weekend and there’s obviously a wide range of what they consider worthy. I have no idea who brought what and I kinda like that I don’t know. That’s part of the fun of reading – everyone has their own idea of the best places to get lost, where they lose their cares.
Last December several sources published their ‘Best of 2012’ lists. As I scanned them I was pleasantly surprised to find I’d read some of the books! Others are on my shelves waiting to be read, some are on my books-to-buy list. Of course after reading the lists I added more books to read!
Some titles made it on more than one list and two of them are FOBBIT by David Abrams and Shine, Shine, Shine by Lydia Netzer. Both authors were panelists at last year’s SCWW Writers’ Conference and I’ll be settling into their books beginning next week.
If you’re looking for some books that you might find worthy and you missed the lists, here are links to 4 of them:

Over the holidays I finally emptied the homeschool closet. My last year of homeschooling was my youngest son’s junior year in high school. He’ll graduate in May . . . from college. When I asked him if he wanted any of the textbooks his one word answer was “BURN!” I’m sure he meant the books, not me. Guess he didn’t think they were worthy ones. 🙂
But I couldn’t burn them. I donated them to the local homeschool group because someone will get lost in them. Right?
What books have you gotten lost in?
